Fruit Basket Punch

What ever happened to the fruit basket? There’s a very striking cover on the December 1947 edition of Gourmet that features a big fruit basket, ham, Champagne, and cigars in front of a Christmas tree. This punch is my attempt at an ode to the once-prized Christmas tradition, the noble fruit basket.

INGREDIENTS

1 oz. apple brandy
1 oz. Cognac
¾ oz. lemon juice
¾ oz. pineapple juice
½ oz. peach liqueur
¼ oz. fig syrup
4 drops saline
Peychaud’s bitters, for garnish
Pineapple wedge or chunk, for garnish
Cocktail cherry, for garnish
Orange half-wheel, for garnish

Combine all in a shaker. Fill shaker two-thirds full with ice. Seal and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Double strain into a rocks glass over regular cube ice. Garnish with fruit arranged on a pick.
