Lord of Misrule (batched)

This was the eponymous cocktail from my Lords of Misrule series (December 2020). It celebrates old-fashioned flavors of the season and, by extension, references the late medieval / early modern English and Scottish Christmas traditions. This batch recipe is meant to be divided into small bottles and adorned with little tags, or to be mixed and kept on your bar so that anyone who comes into your home during the holiday season may partake in a festive cocktail.

INGREDIENTS

5 oz. genever
3¾ oz. blended Scotch
3¾ oz amontillado sherry
2½ oz. walnut liqueur or nocino
½ oz. plus 2 teaspoons boiled cider
½ teaspoon orange bitters, plus more to taste if needed

ABV LEVEL

Notes: this recipe makes 16 oz. Feel free to scale up as your needs dictate. This cocktail was developed to not require a garnish, but if you like, you can include a lemon or orange for the recipients and add a note about garnish to the tag.

In a pitcher or mixing glass, combine all of the above. Taste and make adjustments, keeping in mind the flavors will open up when the mixture is stirred with ice. Bottle the mixture in whatever size bottles you desire; 4 oz. bottles are great for stocking stuffers, 8 oz. or 12 oz. would be great for a host gift. If gifting, make tags or use blank store-bought tags to write the ingredients and instructions for preparing, i.e. stir with ice and garnish, if including. Attach to the bottle with nice twine.
