Ward Eight
One of the only cocktails to be most closely associated with Boston, the Ward Eight is a Whiskey Daisy with orange juice. For our version, I decided to include sherry as part of the base (it appeared in a 1930s Mr. Boston recipe for the drink), use acid-adjusted orange juice, and offer both a long, Daisy version, and a Sour style presentation, as well.
INGREDIENTS
1¼ oz. bonded rye whiskey
½ oz. amontillado or oloroso sherry
1 oz. acid-adjusted orange juice
Scant ¾ oz. grenadine
Barspoon orange Curaçao
Club soda (for long version)
Garnish: orange quarter-wheel and a cherry on a pick
ABV LEVEL
Combine all in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously for 15 seconds (if making a sour-style drink) or 7 seconds (if making a long drink). For sour, strain into a chilled coupe. For long version, strain into a highball glass and top with crushed ice and about 1½-2 oz. club soda. Garnish with an orange quarter-wheel and a cherry on a pick.
