Al is a writer, historian, & cocktail creative based in Massachusetts. Their work focuses on the intersection of the American Cocktail, food, & culture from the Age of Punch through the 1960s & sometimes, the 21st century.

From March 2019 to May 2020, Al was the resident bartender for Basically, a site from Bon Appétit; Al’s home bartending and history column, Happy Hour with Al, appeared monthly. They have also written for PUNCH, Saveur and The Boston Globe. They are the president and chief correspondent for Al's Cocktail Club, a society of inquisitive home bartenders. A lifelong historian, Al studied history and art history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a focus on medieval Europe. Since then, you might have come across Al serving you espresso, catering an event, serving your lunch, or making you a drink at a bar, among myriad other things. They are the former general manager of the beloved Red Hook bar and restaurant Fort Defiance. Al currently bartends at the best bar in western Mass—Gigantic in Easthampton. Al spends their spare time throwing dinner parties, touring the New English countryside, and visiting the big city as often as possible. Al is non-binary transmasculine person.
