Grandpa’s Milk Shake

Simply listed as “Milk Shake” in Jack’s Manual, the original version of this drink is just raspberry syrup and milk, shaken with ice. I wanted to make a chocolatey version with more going on, so I made a kind of chocolate-raspberry milk base and added a scoop of chocolate ice cream on top with walnuts, reflecting the rise of the ice cream parlor and its relationship with the temperance movement.

INGREDIENTS

¾ oz. raspberry syrup
½ teaspoon cocoa powder
¼ oz. chocolate bitters
5 drops saline solution
4 oz. whole milk or oat milk, divided

Garnish: small scoop of chocolate ice cream or non-dairy dessert, chopped walnuts

ABV LEVEL

Combine 1 ounce milk, raspberry syrup, cocoa powder, chocolate bitters, and saline solution in a shaker tin. Flash blend or use an electric whisk to combine. Add 3 ounces of milk, ice, and shake. Dump into a 10 oz. glass and top with more ice if necessary. Garnish with a small scoop of chocolate ice cream and finely chopped walnuts. Serve with a straw and a small spoon.
