Switchel

Switchel, alias satchel, ginger water, swizzle, harvest drink, Yankee beverage, or haymaker’s punch, among others, is essentially old-timey Gatorade, full of electrolytes and energizing sugars. Historical accounts seem to be split between switchel being non-alcoholic and versions that were spiked with rum. A wide range of people drank switchel, from agricultural workers to children to sailors, whalers, and politicians. Our version is very gingery and refreshing.

INGREDIENTS

2 oz. switchel base
½ oz. lemon
Brown sugar syrup to taste (optional)
5 oz. water, club soda, or sweet (n/a) cider

Optional: add an ounce or so of aged rum, rye, or apple brandy

Garnish options: lemon wedge, candied ginger, nutmeg, or what have you!

ABV LEVEL

Combine first three ingredients in an eight-ounce tankard or glass and stir to combine. Add spirit, if using. Top with the lengthener of your choice and stir gently to combine. Garnish if and as you wish!
