Bitter Hi-Fall

This great fall highball was an impromptu response to a request from my spouse. I call it the Bitter Hi-Fall and it was one of the drinks for my Autumn Aperitivo class (2021). Just as that class combined American fall flavor with Italian aperitivo, this drink sits somewhere between a classic highball and an Americano. Equal measures of apple brandy, amaro, and Madeira or sherry join spicy ginger beer in this perfect autumn aperitif.

INGREDIENTS

¾ oz. apple brandy
¾ oz. sherry or Madeira
¾ oz. amaro*
3 oz. ginger beer, to top
Orange wedge, for garnish
Nutmeg, for garnish (optional)

ABV LEVEL

Measure apple brandy, sherry or Madeira, and amaro into a Highball or Collins glass. Fill with ice and top with ginger beer. Appreciate the gradient for a second and then give it a stir. Add a long straw. Garnish with an orange wedge; you can also add a little freshly grated nutmeg on top if desired.

* try one of these:Averna, Braulio, Meletti, Ramazzotti, Amaro Abano, Amaro CioCiaro, Sfumato Rabarbaro, or Argalà.
