An Orange Among the Pines

Sours are a perennial favorite, but there’s something extra special about them during the winter. This version of an amaro sour gives the drinker a choice between alternating sips of the sour and a shot of amaro, or pouring the amaro on top and drinking the two elements together. I channeled Emily Dickinson for the title.

INGREDIENTS

1½ oz rye whiskey
1 oz.
citrus cordial
½ oz. aged gin
½ oz.
acid-adjusted orange juice
1 oz. Braulio or Cynar, to serve on the side

ABV LEVEL

Combine rye, cordial, gin, and orange juice in a shaker. Fill two-thirds full with ice, seal, and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Double strain into a double rocks glass over a big cube. Pour 1 oz. amaro into a shot glass and serve on the side.
