Buckland Bang
Bang is essentially a warm 50/50 mix of ale and cider, fortified with gin or whiskey, sweetened (traditionally with treacle), and flavored with ginger and spice. It is differentiated from other beer cocktails we’ve studied because it doesn’t contain citrus and it isn’t a flip because it doesn’t call for eggs. Bang is kind of it’s own thing, and it’s just what I want to drink on a cold fall evening.
INGREDIENTS
3 oz. dry cider
3 oz. ale
1-1½ oz. aged Old Tom gin (or rye)
½ oz. ginger syrup
¼ oz. allspice dram
¼ oz. boiled cider
Garnish: black pepper and/or nutmeg
ABV LEVEL
Makes one 8-ounce serving; double it for a big tankard-ful!
Set a small tankard or other 8-oz. drinking vessel aside with the Old Tom gin (or rye) in it. Combine all other ingredients in a steaming picture or small saucepan. Using a steam wand or stovetop, heat until very warm (do not boil!). Pour the warmed mixture into the prepared glass. Stir briefly. Garnish with freshly ground black pepper and/or nutmeg if desired.
